Obituary of Bernard C. Robbins
Bernard Carl Robbins of Athens died on April 12, 2016 surrounded by his loving and adoring family.
Born on September 26, 1918 in Corning, New York to Carlton A Robbins and Irena Thurber Robbins. He attended Corning Grammar School and graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1938.
He was married to his high school sweetheart, Margaret Claire McMahon at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Corning, NY on July 31, 1943. They celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage.
Mr. Robbins worked as a machinist at the Ingersol Rand Co. in Athens for 43 years. He served on the Athens Boro Council from 1970-1980 and was Chairman of the Finance, Street, and Police Retirement Committees. He was especially proud of his work during the devastating flood of Athens in 1972 and the special curbing he supervised on Wells Avenue in Athens. As one of the oldest living members, he helped close the doors of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Athens and became a member of Epiphany Parish in Sayre. He was a life time member of Sayre Elks Lodge #1148. He was a member of the Bradford County and Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame. He was one of the original Sea Scouts in Steuben County, NY, designated as ship 121. He was an excellent swimmer and diver and loved the fact that he swam across Keuka Lake at its widest point.
During WWII, he was a member of Company H, 18th Army Infantry in 1938 and an Aviation Cadet, 105th Cadet Squadron, AAFCC, SACC in 1943.
Mr. Robbins loved to entertain his family with music that he played on the piano and organ in his home. Occasionally he would also bring out a ukulele, harmonica, or mouth harp to entertain his family. His musical talents were self taught. He had a great singing voice and loved singing the old hymns in mass or listening to the Methodist Church chimes across the street from his home.
He could fix anything and loved working on his lathe and work bench. He coordinated many projects for his family and he was always the one that they went to for help. His kitchen table was always covered with one or more projects to fix for his family.
Mr. Robbins chief love in life was his family and home. He was a loving and hardworking father and adored his late wife and family. He took great pride in keeping his home painted and flowers planted each year. He loved to garden and shared his interest and fruits from his labor with family and friends. He loved attending all the sporting activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Robbins is survived by four children; three daughters and sons-in law; Kathleen Jones and Edward Jones of Athens, Laura Rosenbloom and David Rosenbloom of Sayre, and Mary Cotton and William Cotton of Athens; a son and special friend, James Robbins and Mary Raupers of Athens; grandchildren; Jay Rosenbloom and fiancé Ashley Spence of Athens; Laura Jones Soehner and husband Gregory Soehner of Rochester; Jill Lister and husband James Lister of Athens, Christopher Jones and wife Kathleen Jones of Athens, Sarah Kemp and husband Matthew Kemp of Sayre, Patrick Cotton and fiancé Amanda Jeffreys of Athens, Molly Cotton of Athens, and Isabella Robbins of Elmira; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Robbins was predeceased by his father and mother, Carlton A. Robbins and Irena Thurber Robbins; his wife, Margaret Claire McMahon Robbins; and sister, Wilma Ruth Robbins.
Friends and family may call on Monday, April 18, 2016 from 6pm-8pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Epiphany, Sayre, PA, with Rev. Vincent Langan officiating. Burial will follow at the Tioga Point Cemetery.
