Obituary of Gary R. Severn

Gary R. Severn, 64, of Sayre, PA died April 18, 2016 at his home on his 64th birthday. He was a lifelong resident of Sayre, PA. Born on April 18, 1952 the son of late Robert H. and Dorothy Knouse Severn. Gary was always ready to help his fellow man and did so without being asked. He shoveled snow and cleared sidewalks for those neighbors who were unable to do so for themselves. He had a dry sense of humor which endeared him to friends and relatives. One of the founding members of the Sayre Historical Society, he was very interested in local history and particularly that of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. After many years, he recently located his grandfather’s LVRR Caboose. His grandfather H.J. Knouse was a conductor on the Lehigh and had the honor of being assigned to the first steel caboose to come out of the Sayre Shops. He was interested in genealogy and had traced the Severn family lineage back to 1649. He was a car buff, interested in antique tractors. He loved anything with wheels and antique tractors and had collected pedal cars and wagons. Gary took pride in his lawn. He was a lifelong caregiver to his brother Tom who was born with Down’s Syndrome. He was a caregiver to his father and to his mother. It was Gary’s dedication that allowed his family to care for their loved ones at home. During his lifetime he was a member of the Sayre Historical Society, a member of Engine Co. #1, worked for many years at Moore’s Auto Parts and then for the Borough of Sayre. Gary was predeceased by his parents, his maternal grandparents, H.J. and Hazel Knouse, his paternal grandparents Robert and Ollie Graves, his brothers Tom and Randy, and his brother-in-law Claude Palmer. He is survived by his sister Mary Lou Palmer of Waverly, NY, his niece Maryanne Geiss of Waverly, NY, his nephew Scott (Penney) Geiss of East Smithfield, PA his great nieces Elizabeth and Emily Geiss of East Smithfield, PA, aunts and uncles Dawn (Joe) Muller and Doug (Maybelle) Graves both of Tioga Center, NY, several cousins and many friends and neighbors, his friends at ElderWood Health Care Center, and his beloved cat Piglet. Friends and family may call on Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 4-6pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Services will follow at 6pm at the funeral home with Rev. Linda L. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA at the convenience of the family.
