Frances Minnie Sponenberg Heffernan of Waverly, NY, formerly of Apalachin, NY passed away at Elderwood Nursing Home on June 23, 2016 at the age of 87. Fran is predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Roy. They were married in Liverpool, NY in 1950. Fran is fondly remembered by her children Ed (Peg) Heffernan, Romulus, NY, Nancy (Rob) Eckstrom, Barton, NY, Cathy (Rene) Maldonado, Tucson, AZ, John (Laurie) Heffernan, Langhorne, PA, Tim (Maya) Heffernan, Santee, CA and very special niece Patricia Peterson, Puyallup, WA. Fran and Roy have ten grandchildren, Jennafer (Jason) Jones, Bobbi Heffernan, Birgit Eckstrom, Korin Eckstrom, Catherine Maldonado, Dylan Maldonado, Michael (Lindsey) Heffernan, Sara Heffernan, Faith (Skyler) Katz and Ethan Heffernan and 7 great grandsons. Fran worked full time raising her 5 children in Apalachin as well as developing her own interests in community service with the St. Margaret Mary's Church. After Roy's retirement from IBM, they moved to Athens, Ontario, Canada for 10 yrs. where they lived on Charleston Lake before returning to the states again to live in Sayre, PA. Fran loved her community, friends and water aerobics. She also loved humming birds. The family would like to thank Fran's special friends and care givers at Elderwood for their kindness and care. A Private Service will be held at convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. Athens, PA. Burial will be at the Tioga Point Cemetery (with Roy) at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made in Fran's memory to the Tioga Opportunities, Inc., 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd., Owego, NY 13827 for hunger relief programs.
