Obituary of Ruth DeWitt

We lost our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Ruth H. DeWitt, on Monday, October 15, 2012 after a brief illness. Ruth was born December 20, 1916, the daughter of the late J. Barclay and Christine Ramsey Duggan in Sayre, Pa. She graduated from Sayre Area High School in 1935. On Christmas night 1936 she met her soul mate, Walter R. DeWitt, and they were married on September 17, 1938. They owned DeWitt Electric for several years. She later worked at the Robert Packer Hospital at the Information Desk for 15 years before retiring in 1978, when they spent summers at their cottage on Seneca Lake and the winters in Dunellen, Fla. They traveled to Canada often to fish. She once caught a 14 lb. lake trout. Ruth was an avid reader, loved playing cards, especially poker, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She is predeceased by her husband of 46 years Walter R. DeWitt, daughter Linda DeWitt, sister Frances North, several brothers-in law, and sisters-in-law. Ruth is survived by her daughter Nancy Polasky of Sayre, Pa, grandchildren Vicky (William) Prigg of Charlotte, N.C., Diane (James) Tuttle of Shelbyville, Ky, Bruce Polasky of Berwyn, Ill, Kristine (Curtis) Hamilton of Alexandria, Va, and Katherine Raduazo of Sterling, Va, great-grandchildren Kristi Twigger and Ryan Prigg of Boca Raton, Fla, Tyler Prigg of Charlotte, N.C., Brian and Justin Tuttle of Shelbyville, Ky, Nadia and Caitlin Hamilton of Alexandria, Va, Dylan Irwin, Brandon, Jordan, and Nathan Mazza of Sterling, Va. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, Pa. Funeral Services will follow at the Funeral Home at 6 p.m. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made in Ruth's memory to the: American Diabetes Association, 65 East Elizabeth Ave., Suite 502, Bethlehem, PA 18018, American Cancer Society, 1948 East Third Street, Williamsport, PA 17701, or Stray Haven, 194 Shephard Road, Waverly, NY 14892. .
