Obituary of Philip Hungate

Philip Arthur Hungate of South Waverly, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Thursday morning, January 24, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Philip was born on December 12, 1946, in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, the son of the late William M. and Dorothy (McKay) Hungate. Phillip moved to the valley in the early 70’s and married his wife, Merry (Nichols) Hungate on October 6, 1973. This year they would have celebrated 40 years of marriage. Philip graduated from North Penn High School in Lansdale, PA in 1964. He proudly served 4 years in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the Destroyer USS Turner Joy. After college, he was employed by IBM and then Lockheed Martin for many years before retiring. Philip was a loving husband, father and grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend to many. He loved volunteering as a tutor for the Bradford County Literacy Program and he taught computer classes at the Sayre Public Library. He very much enjoyed bowling with his Penn York Bowling team and enjoyed the local auto shows and took great pride in showing his Chevrolet Truck. He also loved all sports especially attending the local high school basketball and football games. Philip was predeceased by his parents, William and Dorothy Hungate, his in-laws, John and Margaret Nichols, his sister-in-law, Joyce (Nichols) Depew and several aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins. Philip is survived by his wife, Merry, and his two daughters, their spouses and his three grandchildren; Michele and Joe Quatrini and their son, Lucas of Sayre, and Jessica and Sean Flynn and their children, Meghan and Brady of Sayre, PA. In addition, his wife’s brothers and sisters and their families; Robert and Nancy Nichols of Athens, PA, Margaret Jean and Robert Myers of Litchfield, PA, John and Lorraine Nichols of Michigan, Dennis and Deborah Nichols of Milan, PA and Karen Nichols and Trula Hollywood of Factoryville, PA, Bill DePew of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins and friends. Also, a special thanks to his niece, Becky Miller for her unwavering love and care throughout his illness. Family and friends may call on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 4pm – 6pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A Memorial Service will follow at 6pm at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Trula Hollywood officiating. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA with Military Honors.
