Obituary of Leo Bentley
Leo F. Bentley, Sr., 91, of South Waverly, PA passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Sayre Health Care Facility.
He was born on May 21, 1921 in Pocono Pines, PA the son of the late William J. and Mary E. Shaffer Bentley.
Leo worked as a Carman for LVRR before retiring. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Silver Star. He was on the detail that protected General Eisenhower. Leo enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, building anything and volunteering. He was a Member of Sayre V.F.W. Skiff Bower Post #1536, a Member and Past President of the South Waverly Borough Council, and a Lifetime Member of South Waverly Fire Company. Leo was a Charter Member of the South Waverly Reunion Committee and in 1996 he was voted Man of the Year by the South Waverly Borough Council.
He is predeceased by his wife Jean E. Garzia Bentley on Sept. 10, 2010, his infant son, brothers William and James Bentley, sister Rachel Wood, and grandson Matthew Barrett.
Leo is survived by his children Leo (Lynette) Bentley of South Waverly, PA, Lance (Caroline) Bentley of South Waverly, PA, Carol (Harold) Wells of South Waverly, PA, and Lorie (Richard) Douglas of Athens Twp., PA, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, brother Bernard (Ann) Bentley of FL, sister Mary Agnes Murray of South Waverly, PA, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family may call on Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 6pm-8pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 9:30am at St. James Catholic Church, 503 Clark Street, Waverly, NY with the Rev. Vincent Langan officiating.
Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
