Arthur H. "Art" Thomas, 74, of Athens, PA, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Robert Packer Hospital following an extended illness. He was born on May 19, 1939 in Buffalo, NY the son of the late Florence Thomas Jones. Art enlisted in the Army in 1956, was stationed in Germany during the Cold War, and served during the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, and during the current Southeast Asia War, retiring in 1993. He was an avid Civil War Re-enactor, Revolutionary War Re-enactor, and a Rondevous Re-enactor. In his earlier years, he was active in the Boy Scouts, and was a Bradford County Sheriff’s Deputy. Art was a member of the Athens Boro Fire Department and Fire Police, Lifetime Member of the Athens Twp. Volunteer Fire Company and Fire Police, having served as past President of the Company and Captain of the Fire Police, Lifetime Member of Bradford County Fire Police, member of Greater Valley EMS, member of the Waverly American Legion, and a member of the Chemung County Living History. He is predeceased by his step-father Elmer Jones. Arthur is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years Shirley at home, daughter Lore (Jim) Schwenk of Columbia, PA, sons Steven (Suzanne) Thomas of Gillett, PA, and Charles (Tracy) Thomas of Athens, PA, grandchildren Heather and Tyler Schwenk of Columbia, PA, Tiffaney, Travis, and Meagan Thomas of Gillett, PA, and Amanda and Brittney Thomas of Athens, PA, great-grandchildren Haileigh Thomas of Gillett, PA and Bentley Arthur Thomas-Warfle of Athens, PA, sister Charlotte (Gerald) Jones Richards of Fairport, NY and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends and family may call on Monday, July 1, 2013 from 11am – 1pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will follow at the Funeral Home at 1pm with Chaplain Linda Rogers and Rev. Jim Schwenk co-officiating. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA with Military Honors.
