Obituary of Evelyn Nichols

Evelyn B. Nichols of Sayre, PA went to be with the Lord on July 10, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born December 15, 1928 in Wyalusing, PA to the late Andrew and Josephine Solowiej Loyack. After a three month courtship, Evelyn and Fred Nichols were married February 12, 1949 and celebrated 61 years together on February 12, 2010. Evelyn attended grade schools in Pittston and Camptown, PA. She graduated with honors from Camptown High School where she was active in basketball, chorus and band. She attended East Stroudsburg State University and was a graduate of the Robert Packer Hospital School of Technology where she became a Certified Surgical Technologist. She worked at Sayre Lingerie, the Robert Packer Hospital and the Guthrie Clinic in Sayre. While at the Guthrie Clinic she worked with Dr. Elliott Robinson, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology for twenty years in the office and as his First Assistant in surgery. Over the years, Evelyn served in many local organizations: Den Mother of Cub Scout Pack 66, committee member of Boy Scout Troop 9, the Athens Township Fire Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, was President of the Local Chapter of Surgical Technologists and was on the BOD of the Bradford County Regional Arts Council. She served two terms on the BOD of the Tioga County Country Club. Active in the TCCC Women’s Golf Association, Evelyn was the Club’s representative to Central New York Women’s Golf Association. She won the President’s Cup at TCCC in 2004. A long-standing member of the Valley Chorus, Evelyn held positions of President, Secretary and Historian and was head of the Fund Drive for many years. She was a member of the Valley Singers and Vibrant Voices, select groups of the Valley Chorus, and was a member of The Polyhymnia Music Club for many years. She, along with Eileen Shedd, organized and ran the Arts in the Square Festival for many years. A member of the Church of the Redeemer in Sayre, Evelyn has served on the Vestry, the Altar Guild and the church choir along with serving as Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer. She also played the trumpet in the Redeemer Ensemble. A member of St. Mary’s Guild, she helped run several Fund Raisers at the church. Her love of music was also shown as a soloist in the Valley Chorus, church choir and at weddings and funerals. She was active in the Waverly Summer Theater where she sang in the chorus and had several lead and minor roles. Evelyn loved sewing, knitting, crocheting, golfing, caring for her flower garden, and was an avid reader. She is survived by: Son, Gerald Loyack and his wife Elaine of Londonderry, NH and Son, Gregory Nichols and his wife Mary Frances of Fairfax Station, VA, Grandchildren: Sherry Stein of Alpharetta, GA, Gerald Loyack and his wife Sofia of Woburn, MA, Karen Caesar and her husband Josh of McKinney, TX, Jason Nichols and his wife Nichole of Nichols, NY, and James, Peter and Phoebe Nichols of Fairfax Station, VA, Great-Grandchildren: Hunter and Kate Stein of Alpharetta, GA, Melina and Yanni Loyack of Woburn, MA, Malini and Alex Caesar of McKinney, TX, Lucas, Ryan and Adalia Nichols of Nichols, NY, Two sisters: Mary Capwell of Savannah, GA, Arlene (Ronald) Miller of Rochester, NY, Daughter-in-Law: Kathy Jenny Nichols of Milan, PA, Brother-in-Law: Howard Nichols of Zephyrhills, FL, Sisters-in-Law: Lois (Joseph) Melani of Tucson, AZ, and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn’s greatest love was her family, she loved her sons and she especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind friends who were special: Nancy Shenfield, Bob and ClaraBelle DeLill, Mary Lou Kitchen, Vickie Stewart, Judy and Ron Richter, Pat and Ron Wanck, the wonderful people at the Church of the Redeemer, the Valley Chorus members and her golfing buddies who provided much loving support throughout her illness. She was predeceased by: Her husband, Fred in 2010, Her sons, Larry of Athens, PA in 2002 and Dale of Milan, PA in 2008. Her brother, Robert Loyack of Wyalusing, PA, Sisters-in-Law: Laura Loyack of Wyalusing, PA and Arlene Chapman of Horseheads, NY, Brother-in-Law, Robert Capwell of Savannah, GA, Brother-in-Law, Glen Chapman of Horseheads, NY, and Sister-in-Law, Virginia Nichols of Zephyrhills, FL. At Evelyn’s request there will be no calling hours. There will be a Memorial Service at 2PM on July 20, 2013 held at the Church of Redeemer, 201 South Wilbur Ave., Sayre, PA with Father Glenn Mahaffey officiating. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA. Her ashes will be placed in the Columbarium in the All Saints Chapel at the Church of the Redeemer.
