Obituary of James Spears

James F. "Jim" Spears, Jr., 64, of Sayre, PA passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. He was born on August 1, 1949, in Dothan, AL the son of the late James F., Sr. and Rose Ball Spears. Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a 1967 graduate of Sayre High School. He was a veteran of the U.S.A.F, serving during the Vietnam War in Libya. He was stationed at Andrews A.F.B and served with the Honor Guard under President Richard Nixon. Jim attained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1971. Jim was a huge fan of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and cars, especially his 1962 Buick. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren on trips to ride the Strasburg Railroad, and one of his favorite past times was watching American Pickers. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Phillip M. Spears, sister-in-law Rosemary Spears, and lifelong friend James E. Rinus. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years Shirley at home, children Amy and Glenn Murrelle of Sayre, PA, Debbie and William Wood of Sayre, PA, Kandy Kopatz of Athens, PA, Kevin and Vicky Ferguson of Liberty, NY, and Daniel and Misty Spears of Sayre, PA, twelve very special grandchildren Alex and Seth Murrelle, Chad (Kelly) Wood, Kylie Wood (Gary Brennan, Jr.), Philip Wood, Jessica, Abigail, and Brooke Kopatz, Tanner and Sophia Ferguson, and "RJ" and Kyle Spears, sisters Judi A. (James) Towner of Clarks Summit, PA and Maryellen (Craig) Shedd of Athens, PA, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, special friends Ken and Esther Park, Rosemary Rinus, and Willard and Georgianna. Jim will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Family and friends may call on Monday, October 14, 2013 from 12pm to 1pm at the Church of the Redeemer, 201 South Wilbur Ave., Sayre, PA. A Memorial Service will follow at the church at 1pm with the Rev. Glenn Mahaffey and Rev. Nelson Kopatz co-officiating. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA. Memorial donations may be made in James’ memory to the: Sayre Historical Society, 103 North Lehigh Avenue, Sayre, PA 18840.
