Obituary of James Carroll

James R. Carroll, Sr., 73, of Sayre, PA, passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Jim was born and raised in Sayre and when he married his wife of 51 years they moved to Athens to raise their four children. Jim was on the 1st Sayre All Star Little League team that went to the Little League World Series in Williamsport. His team lost to Juniata County team, 6-0. The team is commemorated in the Hall of Fame. Jim graduated from Sayre High School where he was one of the proud members of the 1st wrestling team at Sayre. After high school, he joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. After being discharged from the Army, Jim made his way home where he worked at Sherwin Williams for a bit and then moved on to the Lehigh Railroad for a few years. After attending vocational school for carpentry, he became a mason. Carroll’s Masonry was well known throughout the valley. You can’t drive more than a mile without seeing one of the buildings or houses Jim and his crew worked on. Carroll’s Masonry – have trowel will travel – We Lay Anything. Jim retired from masonry after 30 some years and then went to work as a subcontractor inspecting fiber optic cable installation in various states. Jim and his great sense of humor were well known by many and he had several "offices" throughout valley where he could be located; Towne Diner, Dunkin Donuts, and Marty’s to name a few. He was also active in the Athens School District wrestling program for years and was involved in all his kids & grandkids various activities. Jim was an avid Washington Redskins fan and "discussed" the football season with many over the years. Gumps was a doting and loving grandfather. So proud he passed around his first grandson’s ultrasound introducing him to the valley. Jim is survived by his wife Ann; his children and grandchildren; Brenda Barry and son Josh; Bob Carroll and his wife Kim, son Alex and daughter Jessica; Deb Buck and her husband Duke (Ken) Buck, son Kenny and daughter Jenna; Jim Carroll, Jr. and his wife Anne, and his daughters, Maisie, Ellie, Josie and Catie. His sisters Marian Green, Rita Scheid and husband Joe; Ann Lord and his brother Willie Carroll and sister-in-law Pat Carroll. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bob and Betty Northrup; brother-in-law Al Northrup and wife Pat; sister-in-law Carol Grainger. Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and loving friends. Jim was predeceased by his parents Robert and Katherine Carroll; twin sisters Betty Brown and husband Charlie, and Marie Mason; brother Ray Carroll; brothers-in-law John (Jeff) Green and Alvin Lord. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA on Tuesday, December 3rd, from 6pm-8 p.m. and Wednesday, December 4th from 10am-11am; to be immediately followed by a short memorial service and then Interment at Tioga Point Cemetery, where one of his prominent works, the entrance sign, can be seen by all. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer’s Research, 57 N.
