Obituary of Gordon Corl

Gordon R. Corl, 78, of Athens, PA passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Community Memorial Hospital, Scranton following a brief illness. He was born on November 28, 1935 in Snedekerville, PA the son of the late J. Morley and Seretta Meyers Corl. Gordon was a Veteran serving in the US Navy from 1955-1958 aboard the USS Spiegel Grove. He was a member of the Sayre Presbyterian Church and graduated from Athens High School, Class of 1954. During his school years, Gordon was the Quarterback for the Athens Football Team. Gordon was employed with the Robert Packer Hospital in the Maintenance Department and retired in that position. He loved to go fishing with his friends Roy and Jack, going out to breakfast at Beemans’ Family Restaurant and then go to spend the day at Tioga Downs. One of Gordon’s hobbies was woodworking and he created many projects for his family and friends. He is predeceased by his wife Patricia E. Ackley Corl, sisters Seretta "Sid" Scheiderick, Gene Corl Patterson, and Mabel "Tiny" Strait, brothers George and Bill Corl, and close friends Owen Fassett and Dick O’Connor. Gordon is survived by his children and their spouses Terri and Brian Wood of Milan, PA Lori and Jerry Cerio of Athens, PA and Scott Corl of Waverly, NY, grandchildren Jamie, Kristina, Eric, Lauren, Meghann, Zachary, and Anthony, great-grandchildren Brandon, Sidney, Shelby, Selena, Rose, and Aiden, brother and sister-in-law Louis and Peg Corl of Athens, PA, sister and brother-in-law Susan and James Burnett of Pine City, NY, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and close friends Roy Conklin and Jack Patterson. Gordon is also survived by all those who knew and loved him, and he will be greatly missed. Friends and family may call on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 from 11am – 1pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will follow at 1pm at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Linda L. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA. Memorial donations may be directed in Gordon’s memory to: Any Animal Sanctuary of one’s choice.
