Obituary of Donald Rolfe
Donald R. Rolfe "Dib" as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, 89, of South Waverly, PA passed away on Thursday, February 02, 2012 at home with his family by his side.
He was born on February 5, 1922 in Sayre, PA the son of the late Irvin and Eva Pollard Rolfe. Don would have been 90 on Sunday, February 5.
Don was a graduate of Nichols High School. He started his career as owner and operator of Rolfe’s Refrigeration, Heating, Electric, and Plumbing in Nichols, NY. He then became employed in the dairy business, selling, installing, and servicing automated bulk milk tanks, where he met several of his lifelong friends. For many years, Don worked as a resident Engineer overseeing the construction of water and sewage treatment plants in PA and NY as well as a project in Quito, Ecuador. In December of 1982, Don became a part-time Building Code and Zoning Enforcement Officer for Athens Borough. When those offices were combined with the Public Works Foreman in 1983, Don was appointed to all three positions and became the first Public Works Superintendent until his retirement in 1987. Don was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church, where he served on the Trustees and Administrative Boards. He also maintained the church heating system for many years. He was a 50+ year member of the Nichols Masonic Lodge #333 F&AM and received the Dedicated Service Award. Don was a past member of Athens Rotary,
PENNY Promenaders, and the South Waverly Community Association. For many years, he was a South Waverly Borough Councilman and Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. Don also served as Vice Chairman of the Municipal Sewer Authority. His interests included hunting, fishing, square dancing, traveling, playing cards, and flying his Cessna 150. He also enjoyed coaching girls’ softball. Don is well loved by his family and the community. We will miss his warm smile and tales of his life’s adventures.
He is predeceased by his parents, an infant son, a granddaughter, brothers Carl and Kenneth, brother and sister-in-law Henry and Alta Callear Rolfe, brother-in-law Clifford Schrader.
Don is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years Marla J. Rolfe at home, children Denise Rolfe of Nichols, NY, Donna Rolfe of Waverly, NY, Gary and Barbara Rolfe of Nazareth, PA , Joe and Midge Rolfe of Barton, NY, and Christine Lukas and Debbie Cornell, her long-time friend and Don’s "adopted" daughter both of Sayre, PA, sister Retha Schrader of Towanda, PA, sisters-in-law Nellie Rolfe Burch and Lucy Rolfe Dimpsey of Florida, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to call at the Waverly United Methodist Church, 158 Chemung Street, Waverly, NY on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 11am – Noon. A Memorial Service will follow at the Church at Noon with the Rev. Anne Bey Canfield officiating. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA.
Burial will be in the Nichols Cemetery, Nichols, NY at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed in Donald’s memory to the: Waverly United Methodist Church, 158 Chemung Street, Waverly, NY or Guthrie Hospice, R.R. #1, Box 154, Towanda, PA 18848, Att.: Clinical Coordinator.
