Dustin D. Vandergrift, 25, of East Smithfield, PA passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 10, 2014. He was born on November 9, 1988 in Sayre, PA; the son of Donald D. Vandergrift and Lisa L. Nichols. Dustin enjoyed hunting and fishing at the Nichols family cabin. He loved his dog Coalee, Honda's and his Seattle Seahawks. Dustin always made himself available to help his friends when needed. Dustin always had a smile on his face and was known for his sense of humor and big heart. Dustin played football for Athens High School, his favorite number was 21, and he also participated in track and basketball. His niece, Azlyn, held a special place in his heart. He is predeceased by his grandmother Wilma Nichols and uncle Brian Nichols. Dustin is survived by his mother Lisa L. Nichols of East Smithfield, PA, father Donald (Ramona) Vandergrift of East Smithfield, PA, maternal grandfather Wallace (Jean) Nichols of East Smithfield, PA, paternal grandparents Gladys (William) Hann of Sciota, PA, sister Amanda (Zachery) Holbert of Athens, PA, aunts and uncles Larry (Barbara) Nichols of East Smithfield, PA, Pamela (Robert) Clarke of Apalachin, NY, Alan (Elaine) Nichols of Palm Harbor, FL, Teresa (Brian) Lennon of Palm Harbor, FL, Ann Vandergrift of Sciota, PA, and James Vandergrift of FL, special niece Azlyn Rose Holbert of Athens, PA, several cousins, and best friend Matthew Detrick of Waverly, NY. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 11:00am at the East Smithfield Federated Church, Church Street, East Smithfield, PA with the Rev. Stan Gill officiating. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA. Burial will be in Union Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
