Obituary of Alene M. Hughes
Alene M. Hughes, 95, of Sayre, PA passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Sayre House following an extended illness.
She was born on February 12, 1919 in Sayre, PA the daughter of the late Thomas Patrick and Gertrude Spellman Hughes.
Alene was a 1937 graduate of Athens High School, 1940 graduate of Robert Packer School of Nursing, and continued her education obtaining her BS in Nursing in 1961 from the University of Pennsylvania, and Master's Degree in Medical Education from Elmira College in 1971. She was employed as a Staff Nurse at Robert Packer Hospital and taught at the Robert Packer School of Nursing for over 40 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Robert Packer Hospital Alumni Organization School of Nursing, Association of American University Women, Business and Professional Women, and was presented the Woman of the Year Award in 1985, Valley Business Women's Network, and St. Joseph's Altar and Rosary Society. Alene was a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Mobile, Literacy Foundation of Bradford County, Stary Haven Humane Society, and Pet Therapy.
She is predeceased by her brothers Paul Edward Hughes in 1921 and Bernard Thomas Hughes on 12/7/1941 aboard the USS Arizona.
Alene is survived by Ken Gregory, Tom Colegrove, several cousins, many former students, and especially two loyal friends Margaret Wood and Jean Gorski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 9:30 am at the Church of the Epiphany, 304 South Elmer Avenue, Sayre, PA with the Rev. Vincent Langan officiating.
Burial will be in Epiphany Cemetery, Sayre, PA.
