Obituary of John J. Sweeney
John James Sweeney, 90, of Sayre, PA passed away on Wednesday, July 02, 2014 at Robert Packer Hospital, surrounded by family following a brief illness.
He was born on March 11, 1924 in Sayre, PA, the son of the late Fred E. and Catherine McGuirk Sweeney.
John was a graduate of Sayre High School and St. Bonaventure College. John was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during WWII from 1941-1947. He was employed with L.V.R.R. as a District Claim Agent and Bob Beirne Law Office, prior to retiring. John was a member of the Church of Epiphany in Sayre, ELKS Lodge #1148 in Sayre, Moose in Waverly, and the Catholic War Vets. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. After his retirement, he spent his time taking his grandchildren to and from school, attending their events, and spending quality time with them.
He is predeceased by his brothers Paul and Frederick and sister Maureen.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Charlotte at home, daughter Margy Sweeney of Sayre, PA, son Brian Sweeney of Holden, MA, son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Jodea Sweeney of Waverly, NY, grandchildren Carin, Matthew, Timothy, Kristin, Natalie, Erin, Veronica, Delanie, and Marnie, sister Kathleen Sweeney of Sayre, PA, and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 9:30am at the Church of the Epiphany, 304 South Elmer Avenue, Sayre, PA with the Rev. Andrew Hvozdovic officiating. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA.
Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
