Obituary of Joseph W. Desisti
Joseph "Little Joe" William DeSisti, 81, of Milltown, PA passed away on Friday, July 18, 2014 after losing his battle against cancer he left in peace at home surrounded by his loving and devoted family at his side.
He was born on March 25, 1933 at Tioga General Hospital, Waverly, NY, the son of the late Frank and Evelynn DeSisti of Milltown, PA.
Joe attended Sayre High School and left at age 17 to join the US Navy. He served his country on the USS Leyte Air Craft Carrier and was stationed in Norfolk, VA from 1951-1955 during the Korean Conflict. Joe was honorably discharged in 1955.
He was very active in the J.E. Wheelock Hose Company #5, serving as past President of the J. E. Wheelock Hose Company #5, was a Lifetime Member . He was past Chief of Engine Company #1, and past President of the Valley Firemen's Association. In 2012, the J.E. Wheelock Hose Company #5 hosted an Appreciation Dinner honoring Joe for his many years of service, devotion, and dedication to the company and his community.
Joe was employed by the Ingersoll Rand, Athens from 1964-1995 when he happily retired. He loved to sit on the front porch, listening to his vinyl on his old record player, while watching over the neighborhood. Lifelong neighbors and friends referred to Joe as the "Mayor of Milltown." Most of all he loved his family, his wife, his 2 girls, and all of his grandchildren who each held a special place in his heart. He also loved spending time at the kitchen table having a cup of coffee and conversation with friends and family, waiting for one of his treasured grandchildren to walk through that kitchen door and say "Hi, Pa."
He is predeceased by his granddaughter Tara Lynn Peters, sister Jean Pierce, brothers Bernard DeSisti, Franklin DeSisti, Sr., and Harold Brown, mother and father-in-law Euleta and Thomas Shaffer, sister-in-law Lucinda (Cindy) Shaffer, and brother-in-law Douglas Shaffer.
Joe is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years Roberta (Bobby) Shaffer DeSisti at home, daughter Ginger DeSisti of Sayre, PA and daughter Bobbi Jo DeSisti-McCutcheon and her husband Ken of Sayre, PA. He has 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Joe is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law Patricia &Thomas Johnson and Jacqueline and August Gallagher, sisters Leona "Donie" DeSisti and Marilynn "Tiny" Robinson, aunt Alva Miller, close niece and her husband Sandy and DeWayne Henrich, brothers-in-law Thomas "Tookey" Shaffer, Jimmy (June) Shaffer, Leslie and Kathy Shaffer, Cubby and Cindy Shafer, and Dean Shaffer, sisters-in-law Marlene (Thomas) Quattrini, Betty "Sis" Gable, Grace (Paul) Gardner, and Shelley (Tyler) Fraley, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family may call on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 from 4pm-6pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will follow at 6pm at the funeral home with the Rev. Vincent Langan officiating.
