My condolences to the Chaffee family. I had the pleasure of speaking with Phyllis and Russell about his Cape Cod Bay swim a few years ago. With his help we were able to reproduce his historic swim. Since then 6 solo swimmers have crossed Cape Cod Bay successfully and it is offered as a regular marathon swim. Russell Chaffee will always be the first.

Russell was one of the finest men I have ever known. He was an outstanding educator and a wonderful citizen of our community. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. He was indeed one of a kind and is simply irreplaceable. May God take him to a well deserved rest.

Our condolences to Russell Chaffee's family on the news of his passing.
I had the pleasure of meeting Carrie Buck, Russell's grand niece, yesterday at Skaneateles Marina, after swimming Skaneateles Lake. We talked about Mr Chaffee's swimming accomplishments , including his first swim across Cape Cod Bay, in fact, we had three swimmers there who have followed in Russell's footsteps by swimming Cape Cod Bay during 2013 & 2014.
Mr Chaffee was truly a giant of our sport, and we would love to hear more about his accomplishments. Our thoughts are with you on his passing on, and we wish you all the best.

R.I.P Mr. Chaffee, it sadden me to be reading that you had passed into the after life may god open his gates and allow this angel walk through and feel no more pain or sickness. I cant even begin to explain how i feel that a wonderful person and mentor and friend to so many people. You have given so much and didn't ask of anything from anyone in return. I remember all those wonderful stories you used to share with us during class or one on one they were very delightful and enjoyable to hear, and how inspiring they were hear. I don't think there ever will be another person to fit your shoes and inspire anyone like you did all of us. So till we meet again GODSPEED full speed ahead, and hope to meet up again rest well my friend and mentor.

Mr. Chaffee was my favorite substitute teachers when I was in school. I always loved his stories especially the one about his pet chicken. I also enjoyed seeing him from time to time at the chiropractor's. He was so pleasant to talk to. I will miss seeing his smiling face.

Very saddened to learn of Mr. Chaffees passing. Had him as a teacher many times through the years....there was always somebody in the class who would give him a hard time but he was a great teacher. My thoughts and heart to his family...rest in peace Mr. Chaffee......

I was sad to read of Mr. Chaffee's passing in The Morning Times. It has been 50 years since I sat in his classroom but it might as well have been yesterday. An amazing man and educator. Cycca

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Chaffee. He was one of my teachers back in the late 60's and was a great man to be around. I am still impressed at what he was able to do as a swimmer and remember his feats to this day. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
