David W. Gower, Sr., 82, of Athens, PA passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at the Towanda Skilled Nursing Unit, Towanda, PA. He was born on May 18, 1932 in Nanticoke, PA the son of the late David and Mary Belles Gower. David graduated from Nanticoke High School and Wilkes College. He was a Veteran of U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning from the service, David was a Teacher and Principal at Athens Area Schools, before retiring. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sayre, Sayre V.F.W. Post #1536, Sayre ELKS Club, past member of the Sayre Sportsman's Club, serving as an Officer and President, and he was the first President of Chehanna Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. David is survived by his long-time companion Dorothy Maslin of Waverly, NY, children David Gower, Jr. of Athens, PA, Greg Gower of Waverly, NY, Gretchen Gower of Elmira, NY, and Eric and Delia Gower of San Anselmo, CA, grandchildren Gregory Gower of FL, Isabella Robbins of Elmira, NY, and Daphne Gower of San Anselmo, CA, special aunt Sarah Benscoter of Nanticoke, PA, and several cousins. Friends and family may call on Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 4pm – 5pm at St. John Lutheran Church, 207 S. Hopkins Street, Sayre, PA. A Memorial Service will follow at the church at 5pm with the Rev. Alexandria Liepe officiating. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home, Athens, PA. Memorial donations may be made in David's' memory to a charity of one's choice.
