Florence Ruth Salsman Stedge Whitmire, 83, of Athens, PA was called home to be with her Lord on Monday, October 6, 2014, at Elcor Nursing Home, Horseheads, NY following an extended illness. She was born on September 3, 1931 in Sayre, PA the daughter of the late Carlton and Augusta May Salsman. Florence attended Laceyville High School. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking and sewing, and through the years made many of her family's clothing. Florence's favorite holidays were Thanksgiving and Christmas when she was able to cook, bake, and sew for her family. She also enjoyed crafts and collecting angels. Florence was a member of the Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and volunteered at the Robert Packer Hospital. She is predeceased by her husbands' John Stedge, Harold Smith, and Wayne Whitmire, grandson Daren Stedge, great-granddaughter Meleigha Salsman, and sisters Phyllis Shaffer and Doris Eberlin. Florence is survived by her children Eugene "Gene" and Anita Salsman of Sayre, PA, Richard and Debra Stedge of Ulster, PA, Gary and Carolyn Stedge of Columbia Crossroads, PA, Dale and Gail Stedge of Athens, PA, Jon and Betsy Stedge of Syracuse, NY, Barbara and Bernard Matterazzo of Horseheads, NY, Debra and Ronald Gibson of Locust Grove, OK, and Randy Stedge of Bentley Creek, PA, stepchild David and Susan Whitmire of Waverly, NY, 35 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, brothers Donald, Steven, James, and Kevin Salsman, and many nieces, nephews, cousins. Friends and family may call on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 10am – 12pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 12pm with Chaplain Gary Stedge officiating. Burial will be in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, PA.
