Obituary of Shirley R. Gross
Shirley Capwell Gross, of Sayre, PA, passed away at home after a brief illness on Saturday, October 26, 2014.
Shirley was born on January 3, 1942 in Athens, PA, to Andrew Capwell and Jessie Chandler Capwell.
She graduated from Waverly High School in 1960, and finished her degree in elementary education at Mansfield University in 12964. She married John Gross on July 25, 1964, and happily celebrated fifty years with him last summer. Shirley taught second grade teacher at St. James Catholic School in Waverly, NY, and Epiphany School in Sayre, PA. A devoted wife, mother, and friend, she had a special gift for sewing and making crafts, and many people benefited from her generosity with the toys, clothes, and quilts she created. Shirley also was active in the Tioga General Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered for many years as a Girl Scout leader. In later years, she volunteered with handicapped children in the Sayre School District and provided special support for breast cancer survivors in her circle of friends, having battled the disease herself in 1991.
She is predeceased by her parents, a younger brother John, and a miscarried infant.
Shirley is survived by her husband, John Gross, of Sayre, PA, her sister, Dianne Wilson, of Waverly, NY, and three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sherri Gross, of Sayre, PA, Sheila and Colin Gelbutis, of Sayre, PA, and Shelley and Brent Hamilton, of Milan, PA. Her three grandchildren, Cole Gelbutis and Mallory and Mitchell Hamilton, survive her also and were one of her greatest joys. Shirley is also survived by a nephew, Andrew Wilson, of Waverly, NY, and two nieces, Holly Wilson, of Cary, NC, and Heather Sandford, of Clearwater, FL, as well as two grandnieces, a grandnephew, two great grandnieces and a great grandnephew.
No services are scheduled, but a private family gathering will be held at a later time. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA.
