Giovanna “Gennie” Insogna Burkhart, 94, of Sayre, PA, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, February 13, 2015. She was born on April 16, 1920, the daughter of the late Peter Insogna and Maria Nicole Cantando Insogna in Macchia Valfortore, Italy and arrived in New York on December 23, 1927. Gennie attended Elmira City Schools and received her Regents Diploma from Elmira Free Academy in 1939. She continued her education at the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing, graduated and received her Nurse’s Cap in 1943. As a dedicated Registered Nurse, she was employed with Robert Packer Hospital as a private duty and general duty nurse, retiring in 1985. Gennie met Francis “Frank” Burkhart at the Chocolate Shop in Sayre, PA. On October 2, 1943, they were married at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Elmira, NY and celebrated their 67th anniversary prior to his passing. Gennie and Frank loved traveling and taking Caribbean cruises. She was passionate about growing plants, organic gardening, cooking, entertaining, and hosting neighborhood parties. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidering and making keepsake quilts for family and friends. Following retirement, Gennie spent countless hours volunteering at the Robert Packer Hospital, Red Cross Bloodmobile, and My Brother’s Keeper (Ugly Quilts). She was a member of the Susquehanna Valley Audubon Society, Epiphany Parish, Sons of Italy Roma Madre Lodge #1342, and enjoyed socializing and attending dances at the Sayre Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #1148. She is predeceased by her husband Francis Robert Burkhart, daughter Frances Rose Burkhart Keenan, brother Dominic Insogna, sister Rose Insogna Carrozza, brother’s-in-law William Henrich, James Smith, James Burkhart, and William Semple. Gennie is survived by her children Joan and Jay Manning of Wellington, FL, John Burkhart, Margaret “Peggy” Burkhart of Sayre, PA, and Robert Burkhart of North Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren Krista and David Roland of FL, Jessica and Todd Fronrath of FL, Christopher, Mathew and Jesse Keenan of TX, great-grandchildren Truman and Brandt Roland, Avery and Trent Fronrath, sisters-in-law Catherine Burkhart Smith Semple of CA and Gladys Burkhart Henrich of CA, brother-in-law Joseph and his wife Mary Burkhart of FL, and numerous nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Epiphany Cemetery, Sayre, PA at a later date. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA.
