Obituary of Roger S. Johnson

Roger S. Johnson, 77, of Athens, PA passed away on August 26, 2015 following a brief illness. He was born on May 11, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY the son of the late Helge and Katharine Zavatson Johnson. During his years at Fort Hamilton High School, Roger was an accomplished athlete in Track and Field winning several medals at the Madison Square Garden events. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy Seabees for 12 years. During his service with the Navy, the battalion he was assigned to was responsible for building the first Electrical Plant in Antarctica. Roger enlisted in the US Army for 4 years, serving in the Vietnam War. He served in Operation Desert Storm with the US Air Force, retiring in 1991. While in the military, Roger enjoyed the traveling and seeing all the sights. Roger was married to Marta Cruz of Brooklyn, NY for 26 years and had one daughter, Marsha. Roger grew his own grapes and made homemade wine from them. He raised Border Collies and Siberian Huskies. Later in life, Roger loved spending time with his Life Partner of 26 years, Darlyn, and his cat, Bob. He spent his free time watching classic movies, doing cryptograms, and puzzles. Roger is survived by his partner of 26 years Darlyn Batschelet and her children, his daughter and son-in-law Marsha and Jim Stoddard of Sugar Run, PA, grandchildren Lindsay and Steven, Jr. Sudell and Brandon Stoddard, great-grandchildren Bentley Stoddard and Taylor Stoddard and his cousin Penny Conway. Friends and family may call on Friday, September 4, 2015 from 1pm – 2pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will follow at 2pm at the funeral home.
