Obituary of Duane O. Wilcox

Duane O. Wilcox, 92, of Athens was born April 13, 1923 in Auburn Center, PA on the Wilcox Farm, to Glenn and Emma Woodruff Wilcox. He passed away at Bradford County Manor on January I, 2016. Duane married his Sayre High School sweetheart, Marvis Jean Whyte, on August 10, 1941. Patriotism was high and WWII was well under way. Duane wanted to do his part, so he joined the Army on November 22, 1943. It took five days sailing on the Martin Bay, an English ship, before landing on Utah Beach, Duane was involved in the Normandy, the Northern France and Rhineland campaigns. After 5 months of combat, he was wounded November 17, 1944 on the Siegefried line in Germany. After recovering in England, he was transferred to the Air Force and trained as an airplane mechanic. Despite the war ending May, 1945, Duane continued to repair the battle damaged planes. Duane was discharged December 19, 1945. Duane earned 3 Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European-African Middle Easter Campaign, WWII Victory Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII. After being discharged from the service and wanting to support his family, Duane held several positions until he was hired at General Electric Foundation Foundry in Elmira. He became proficient as a Grade A Moulder. He retired after 34 years. Duane's favorite pastime was his car…..whatever one he happened to own! Cleaning, waxing, and taking drives with Marvis was his greatest pleasure! Duane was a self-taught woodworker who passed his natural talent unto his sons. He would craft things out of wood for family gifts and donations to the Sayre Church of the Redeemer Christmas bizarre. Another work pleasure was mowing the lawn and trimming the bushes. Duane and Marvis enjoyed many trips and activities with the Athens Seniors. They loved camping in their little "Pee Ant"! Most of all, they enjoyed being with family. Grandchildren never left the house without Grandpa giving them a bag of candy. Duane is predeceased by his sister, Maude Brown, brother Donald Wilcox, daughter-in-law Carolyn Murphy Wilcox, and son-in-law Ralph "Pete" Mullen. Duane is survived by his loving wife of 74 years Marvis Jean of Athens, PA, daughter Bonnie Mullen of Riverside, CA, son Duane (Catherine) Wilcox of Pine City, NY, son David (Jamie) Wilcox of Erin, NY, granddaughter Sherry (Fernando) Murillo of Rancho Belago, CA, grandson Gary Mullen of Riverside, CA, granddaughter Donna (John) Pittenger of Riverside, CA, grandson Terry Wilcox of Pine City, NY, granddaughter Kelly Wilcox of Rhinebeck, NY, granddaughter Shawnie (Thomas) Brown of Caton, NY, grandson Joel (Shannon) Wilcox of Pine Valley, NY, grandson Lance (Amber) Wilcox of Pine City, NY, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter, sister-in-law Dolores Warner of Centennial, CO and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
