Obituary of Elwin Maurice Fay
E. Maurice Fay, 85, of Athens Township, PA, passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at home with his family by his side following his brief fight with cancer.
He was born on November 27, 1930, in Springfield Twp., PA, the son of the late Elwin H. and Loretta M. Fuller Fay.
Maurice was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He loved spending time with his family and friends, taking many trips with his wife, Louise, to visit family in Virginia, South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. He graduated from Athens High School in 1948. Upon graduating, Maurice entered the Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. Returning from the military, he went to work at Thatcher’s in Elmira, NY, and retired after 30 years of faithful service from IBM in Owego. Maurice enjoyed providing firewood to his friends and customers. His mantra was, “If it is something worth doing, then do it right the first time.” Keeping this in mind, he would cut, deliver, and stack firewood for many. After retiring, his favorite job was “Gatekeeper” for the Athens Township Parks. He greatly enjoyed all the wildlife he encountered, and he was meticulous in his care of all the parks. He enjoyed interacting with the park goers and was always eager to fulfill their needs.
As a community oriented citizen, Maurice cared about his community and its residents. He proudly served on the Athens Township Board of Supervisors for 20 years. He served in many capacities, including Chairman of the Board and Chair of several committees. Maurice was a proud Marine Veteran and advocate for all Veterans. He was instrumental in pursuing the Veterans’ Memorial Monument placed in Athens Township. He and friends collected donated and abandoned scrap metal for funding the project. Upon completion, he continued to show his patriotism by assisting with the maintenance of the site. He was a member of the Waverly American Legion, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a lifetime member of the Athens Township Fire Company joining in March of 1989. He served the fire company as president for many years, working bingo and various other fundraising activities ensuring its success for the safety of the community. On many occasions, Maurice could be seen along the roads, in the parks, or at the township building and fire hall maintaining their appearances.
He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Audrey Fay Macafee and Sylvia Fay Willis.
Maurice is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Louise Keene Fay at home, children Terry and Roger Harris of Spotsylvania, VA, Sandy and Bill Licata of Barton, NY, and Barb and Mike Soprano of Athens Township, grandchildren Roger and Stacey Harris of Richmond, VA, Daniel Harris of Spotsylvania, VA, Jessica and Justin LaValle of Athens, Jennifer Kohler of Barton, NY, Nicholas and Keiran Soprano of Athens, and Michael Soprano of Corry, PA, and great-grandchildren Emberlynne Kohler, Brayleigh Kohler, Zoey LaValle, Ryland Harris, Corbin Fiske, and Jackson Harris, brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Sylvia Fay of Athens Township, and many nieces and nephews.
