John M. Hennessy, son of the late Martin and Mary (Hughes) Hennessy passed away at home after a brief illness on May, 23, 2016. Born on September 8, 1946 at the Robert Packer Hospital, he was a lifelong resident of the Valley. After graduating from Athens High School in 1965, he entered the United States Navy and served for three years. He was Honorably Discharged in November 1968 as a Machine Repairman, Third Class. On June 4, 1971, he married Marcia Onofre from Sayre and together they raised two children. During this time, he worked for Ingersoll Rand, Lehigh Valley Railroad, and then General Electric Railcar Repair for 34 years. There he served as President of Local Union #196. At one time, he was also a member of VFW Skiff Bower Post #1536 where he served as President of the Board of Directors and a member of Color Guard of Catholic War Veterans. He is predeceased by his parents, a brother-in-law Peter Onofre in 1990 and a twin sister Jean Hennessy Onofre in 2009. He is survived by his wife, Marcia Onofre Hennessy, a daughter and son-in-law Karen Hennessy Peters and Tim Peters in Athens, Georgia, a son and daughter-in-law John J. and Shannon (Isbell) Hennessy in Towanda, Pennsylvania, six grandchildren Evan and Mckenna Peters and Caelan, Aidan, Rian, and Brody Hennessy, two sisters Mary (Robert) Walker and Pat (Conrad) Miller, a brother-in-law, Steve Onofre, a sister-in-law, Merieca (Jim) Carroll, eight nieces and nephews and their families, and Randy, Vicki, Noah, and Hannah Carpenter. Friends and family may call on Thursday, May 26, 2016 from 5pm-7pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 7pm with the Rev. Richard Davis officiating from Guthrie Hospice. Burial will occur at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in John's memory to any of the local animal shelters. The Hennessy family would like to thank all the people who supported us during this difficult time.
