Obituary of Walter Berger
Walter Berger, 88, of Sheshequin Twp., PA passed away on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Bradford County Manor, Troy following a period of declining health.
He was born on March 30, 1928 in Califon, NJ, the son of the late John and Mary (Shunduk) Burger.
Following high school graduation, Walter joined the United States Air Force. Upon returning home, he began his excavation business, Berger Excavating, with his wife which they owned and operated until his retirement. Moving from New Jersey to the Ulster area, he continued to do excavating jobs. He also worked part-time at the local dirt track in NJ, Flemington Speedway, and he especially enjoyed working with the Sprint Cars. He was an avid NASCAR fan.
He is predeceased by his brothers Joseph and Frank Berger and sister Elizabeth Antonow.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Gloria Stockton at home, children Nancy Bearse of KY, Richard Berger of Sayre, Valerie Meyer of TX, John W. Berger of Sheshequin Twp., PA, and Carol Roberts of NY, 12 grandchildren, his great-grandchildren, sisters Helen Taormina of Brooklyn, NY and Marie Poniatowski of NJ, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
At the request of family, there will be no calling hours or services. The family is being assisted by Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA.
