Obituary of Gene C. Dimmick

Gene Carlton Dimmick, 87, of Sayre, PA passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the Sayre Healthcare Center in Sayre, PA. He was born at the Old People's Hospital (now Robert Packer Hospital) in Sayre, PA the son of the late William and Ruth VanGassbeck Dimmick. Gene lived his entire life in the Valley area. He graduated from Waverly High School in June of 1947. He returned to Waverly High School to take a post-graduate course (1947-1948). He enrolled in the 2 year Mechanical Technology Course at Broome Community College from 1948-1950. He loved basketball and while at college he played JV basketball and even after that he talked about playing on a "potbelly" league! He worked at the Ingersoll Rand in Athens, PA immediately following graduation from college and then was drafted in the Army (1951-1953), which was during the Korean War. He spent his first 18 months of service in the infantry at Camp Rucker, Alabama as a Squad Leader. After successfully passing an exam, he was promoted to CPL. He spent the last six months of his service in Germany as a Squad Leader. He was stationed in Germany in the 14th Armored Calvary and served as Commander of Machine Gun Jeep in a Scouting Section. He had an honorable discharge in 1953 at Camp Kilmer, NJ. Following this, he was hired as a Tool-Design Trainee at Remington Rand, Elmira, NY and in 1959 he went to work at Westinghouse, Horseheads, NY. In about 1985, after receiving additional training, he transitioned from a drawing board to using Computer Aided Design (CAD), which he used until he retired in February of 1992. He was a "church-goer" at a very early age. Someone told about him climbing under the pews at the North Waverly Chapel. He served in the Athens Wesleyan Church for 23 years and spent the rest of his years at the Chemung Christian Fellowship. Some of the titles he held during all those years are as follows: Chairman of the Finance Committee, Local Board of Administration, Trustee, Sunday School Secretary, Usher, and Quarter-Master. Gene served on the Board of Directors at the Bible Lighthouse for many years. Gene loved to hunt with the boys, fish and ride his motorcycle. He spent many an evening attending the grandchildren's football, baseball, basketball, dance recitals, dramas, concerts and auto racing events. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley A. Dimmick, whom he married in April of 1974; his children Kathleen and Tim Mather of Portal, GA, Gary and Denise Dimmick of Waverly, NY, Jeffrey and Tina Dimmick of Clearwater, FL, Jonathon and Kathy Dimmick of Milton, PA; and his step-children Sandi and Tom Drake of Simpsonville, SC, Glenda and Gene Otten of Athens, PA and Dr. James and Cathy Gabriel of Sayre, PA. He has 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren and 13 step great grandchildren. Friends and family may call on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 10am-12pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A Funeral Service will follow at the funeral home at noon with Rev. Randy Stilson officiating. Burial will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
