To my Dear friend, Donna, and all the Smith family: Hal was a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather, brother and friend. He was tremendously talented, but more than that, he had the gift of serving others, not only with his excellent musicianship but his compassionate heart, as well. I can't even imagine how your family is feeling, but please know that I pray for God's peace, love, comfort and presence to be with all of you. With love.

I am truly sorry for the loss of Mr. Smith. I was one of his students in the Rowe middle school in 74-76. I was in the band and the stage/jazz band that he lead. He was a great teacher and I loved being his student. I also was in a club that he lead about fires and firefighting. Please know that he was loved and will be missed. You are in my prayers.

Hal Smith,
So many good times, so many memories. Teaching, bowling, the Phillies' games, Camp Brule, poker on snow days, Penn State football trips when Hal wanted to watch the band instead of going for food. Many memories.
He was dedicated teacher and a great member of the community. He will be missed. My condolences to Donna and the family.

I was so sad to find out this morning of Mr Smith's padding. I have many fond memories of him from middle school and high school. I will never forget when I forgot a lesson and he came to get me from home ec. I complained that I would miss learning how to sew something, so he sat down at the machine and proceeded to show me how to do it! I graduated from Athens in 1985. I'm so sorry...

I knew Harold as a friend for a few and distant years in Donegal High School. Smitty was an unusually kind and generous person who enjoyed the successes of others as much as his own. Not judgmental or demeaning, speaking and thinking good of others, his example remains a standard for me some 50 years later. Goodbye Smitty it was a pleasure and a blessing to have known you.

What a shock. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of a fine man. Harold was one of my first friends when we moved to Mount Joy in the third grade. We went to Trinity Lutheran, where we were both acolytes, sang in the church choir, and went to Sunday school together. Later, in our years at DHS, we were in the same classes, band, chorus, orchestra, and soccer. One of my favorite memories of him was playing Pappy Okum to my L'il Abner. He was perfect for that role and he got the laughs he was supposed to. He was an excellent musician and we all expected him to follow in Mr. "Beat" Shields' footsteps. I'm glad to have seen him at our 50th reunion and share a few memories. Harold will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear the news of Mr. Smith's passing. I spent my childhood growing up with his sons. Our fathers were both in the fire department together.Throughout elementary school and middle school he would pester me about taking up clarinet lessons. Well, it took many years but finally in 8th grade I conceded. I will never forget going to the house one night for a clarinet lesson to walk in to seeing his train set that he had built, taking up the entire living room. It was something I will never forget! He was someone to admire.. He was my coach.. my Mr. Fixit.. he motivated me to do better in school and band. I admired him so much for his love of his students and his music that I went to college for music as well. I wanted to have an impact on lives, just like he did ours. I hate that I can not get up there for the funeral to remember one of the people who had touched my life the most as a kid.

My deepest sorrow to the Smith Family for the loss of such a GREAT man. I know Hal from The Penn York Highlanders.Hal was the second person I met when I walked in to join. He made me feel at home and was Quick to make a friend out of me. Hal Became my teacher and and soon to be a person I looked up to.He always took time to put things into a different way to make sure you could understand. As i worked my way up through the band I found myself marching next to Hal..I learned to concentrate on my playing as Hal played seconds right next to me. I always felt like that was something special to be able to hear his harmony.I enjoyed many years like this. When I moved to another position of leadership in the band I was blessed by my relationship with Hal once again as I would turn to him for advice on countless occasions.
I had one other thing in common with Hal, I am a Firefighter for the City of Elmira .When Hal learned this he would tell me all about the calls he had every week . He also would ask about my calls in the city. I remember Hal telling me about driving the Rigs to the calls. He really seemed to like driving Fire Trucks.I enjoyed his stories and the last thing i remember about Hal and the fire service is how proud he was of recieving a special duty jacket in reccognition of his service last year. I told him That I had one just like it and that there was a vest just like thejacket and I told him I liked the vest as well as I liked the jacket. A week or two later Hal comes up and says i thought about what you said and I bought the Vest.I hope Hal enjoyed talking to Me as much as I enjoyed talking to Him.
As Pipe Major of the Penn York Highlanders I am in a pickle. You all know what Hal ment to you. Well Ive got to say Hal was so much more than Just a Member. He was reliable , He was a wealth of knowledge, He was talented beyond any member in the Band,He was our treasurer, He was our voice of reasonHe was our tutor and He was a friend to everyone .It will be impossible to even think we could replace him. And we will not even try. we will Honor him and show our respect for him as long as there is a PYH band. He will be sorely missed. We will have a hole in our band that cannot be filled Until we meet again My Friend.

Mr. Smith was a great person. He taught me the love for music starting when I was in elementary school. I was in stage band, full orchestra, and marching band. I also had the honor of playing in the John Phillip Sousa Band while in high school along with several other band members. It was an honor to be chosen to play in the that band. Because of his love of music I am now playing in a handbell choir for my church, because he taught me how to read music. I know the community, fire departments, and Athens Area School District will greatly miss him. His family is our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Remember all the great times you had with him. May God Bless you all during this difficult time. Sincerely Lori (Vanderpool) Brown
