I was born on the Vetter farm in Sheshequin, and our family was friends with neighbors and fellow church members, George and Betty Keir and Ervin and Mary Keir Harris. When we moved to Athens and changed churches, we got to know Beatrice Keir Dowd and her family, and Ted and Evelyn later became good church friends of my parents.
I had Ted for 10th grade science--what a kind, patient man he was. Evelyn, I've always remembered your twinkling smile, and I'm sorry you've lost your partner.

I remember "Mr." Keir so very well. A kind and intelligent spirit with a wonderful sense of humor. My family and I all recall what a great job he did when taking over our Grandpa Hicks' Sportsman's Sphere column in the Times. May the fond memories keep him with us all forever, family . . friends . . students.
Love and peace,

Our prayers and condolences go out to Ted's family. Ted was one of the icons of education in this area and his grace and wit will be sorely missed by all.
When I first started my teaching career at Athens High,Ted, along with three other teachers, helped to mentor me during that crucial rookie year. Ted and the others were instrumental in my professional development. It was a distinct pleasure teaching with Ted and my other mentors. Now, all but one of them has left us.
The area has lost one of its brightest lights. Ted was a wonderful man and a truly concerned and involved citizen. As Marc Antony said, "When comes such another?"

My best memory of Ted has to do with the way that he handled my embarrassment of him through my own ignorance and sophomoric behavior.
Long-story-short, my buddies and I were sent home from our outdoor job due to heavy rain and decided that that was a good excuse for an all-day party; about 4:00 P.M., the sun came out and Ted let us know our Legion baseball game was still on at Towanda.
Not only were we not in any shape to hit a baseball, but we started shouting things at the opposing players and umps that make me cringe to this day.
When I sobered up the next day, I realized what deep hurt I had caused to my coach, teacher, neighbor, and friend Ted; I literally had seen the disappointment in his eyes.
To his credit, he never said a word to me about it; however, he did not put me in the next game and I never started a game for him again.
I totally understood; he had every right to throw me off the team and I was still just happy to still be playing a little bit of ball.
Things came full circle in our last game at a tournament near Harrisburg. We were down by a ton of runs and I came up with the bases loaded. I looked down to him in the third base coaching box and he was giving me the ol' "skin on skin/right hand across the letters" sign--the suicide squeeze! I thought he would want me to try to drive the ball, maybe hit one out, but I put on my best poker face and laid down a perfect bunt (I had never bunted at any level of baseball; I have enjoyed all sorts of things in football, baseball, and lacrosse, but that at-bat was the highlight of my sports career!)
I laughed my way down to first base and, as we passed at the end of the inning, Ted's eyes twinkled and he gave me that cock-eyed grin of his.
Lesson learned.
To me, the above was a microcosm of my friend's personality. He knew young people do stupid, impetuous things, but he taught me and made me accountable without yelling at or demeaning me. It rightfully humbled me and I learned the unintended consequences of overindulging in alcohol the hard way.
I was so fortunate, years later when I was raising my own children, to be able to re-apologize to him and let him know how indelible an impression he had made on me.
I have had a wonderfully fulfilling 62 years on this earth, but HIS is the life I still aspire to.
So often, our loved ones take on a bigger glow when they are gone; I am so happy that I knew one of the few Renaissance gentlemen during his actual life and , without hyperbole, was the richer for it.
To all of Ted's family, thank you SO much for sharing him with the rest of us; I'll see you Saturday.
With respect and love,
Steve Crawford

We were so sorry to hear about Ted but we are comforted in the knowledge that he led a full and fruitful life. We consider it a privilege to have known him and to learn from him. He was a very gracious, caring man. His gifts to SRAC and all the school children that he educated and entertained is unprecedented. Also his knowledge and work that included the entire community as a whole deserves praise. Ted was a great guy and we will miss him very much. We will include the whole family in our prayers and pray that God will give you all strength through this sad time.

So sorry to hear of Ted's passing...he was a man who had a great influence on our passion for the outdoors, and traveling the state we were able to see and hear how much respect Ted carried across Pennsylvania for his efforts with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Was proud to be able to call him our friend, and proud to share the turkey woods and trout stream with him on occasion. He will be greatly missed. Thoughts and prayers to all the Keir family.....
