Obituary of Emilie L. Cheresnowski
Emilie Petrowski Cheresnowski, 89 years old of East Athens, PA, passed away following an extended illness on Saturday, February 25 at the Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Emilie was born at home in Milltown, Sayre, Pa on January 30, 1928 to Anthony and Tekla Petrowski, who were fortunate to leave Poland and come to America to work and raise their family. Emilie lived in Sayre most of her life, graduating from Sayre High School. She married Stephen “Chasie” Cheresnowski who was the love of her life.
Emilie worked at Remington Rand in Elmira for over 15 years after which, with her husband, they purchased a greenhouse growing vegetables and flowers. She is remembered most for the years she, along with her two sisters, owned and operated Covey’s Soda Bar on Main Street in Athens. Local parents trusted that, while at the soda bar, their children would be in a safe and caring place eating delicious cheeseburgers and hot fudge sundaes. Many will remember the tight rein Emilie held. No one wanted to be on her “grounded list”.
Upon retiring, Emilie was a loving caregiver to her two sisters, Helen and Stephanie. Many remember the little truck with the three sisters driving throughout the Valley.
Emilie’s interests were many. She loved her huge vegetable garden and raspberry patch. Everyone knew she was picking berries when the pies started to arrive at homes. She was happiest in her garden clothes with dirt on her hands. The deer, bear and birds in her backyard gave her so much enjoyment. They knew they had refuge at her home.
Emilie had a keen mind and loved to read and learn up until her passing. God and church were very important to her and she was a member of St. Joseph’s and Epiphany Catholic Churches and the Ukrainian Church in Sayre. She attended mass daily and was always cooking for church functions.
Emilie left behind many who loved her. Having no children, she was very much a part of her niece’s and nephew’s lives, spending many hours with them. Those closest to her were Stephen (Staci) Covey, John (Ruth) Cheresnowsky and Regina Callear and their children Stephen, Joseph and Christopher Covey, John Jr. (Amy) and Lisa Cheresnowsky and Mary (James) Callear Sourdiff. Emily also had great, great nieces and nephews that she enjoyed tremendously.
Also remaining are brother-in-law Wesley (Cathy) Cheresnowsky of Oklahoma and Elizabeth Cheresnowsky of Virginia.
Others Emilie left behind were her faithful coffee group Pauline McSparron, Rita Calveric, Marie Wheeler, Barbara Cocagne, Mary O’hara and Virginia Raftis as well as neighbor Pauline Brennan.
Emilie was predeceased by her husband Stephen Cheresnowski in April of 1967 and sisters Stephanie Petrowski Covey and Helen Petrowski in 2005. Brothers-in-law Peter, John J and Anthony Cheresnowsky, sister-in-laws Mary Templer, Kathern Kohan, Sister Helen Cheresnowsky, SSMI and sister-in-law and best friend Ann Cheresnowsky Stys.
