Obituary of Harry E. Shafer
Love is not blind, Hope is not lost,
Faith will not Falter,
Your family will go on with Love in our Hearts, and Faith in our Souls.
In the early morning of April 5, 2017, Harry E. Shafer went to his final home to be reunited with the love of his life, Helen Jane Shafer. Harry was born June 6, 1929 to Harry and Edith Shafer.
After graduating from Waverly High School, he joined the Navy. On November 20, 1948, Harry married Helen Drew and together they raised six children and their family has grown to a total of 92. Harry's favorite past time was definitely fishing with his sons, sons-in-law, grandsons, brother, or his best friend Dick Peterson. Harry and Helen always enjoyed and/or demanded (lol) the company of their family and on any given Sunday, they would have a house full for dinner. Harry worked in the Valley all his life, retiring from the IR Foundry, until they closed. He was the leader of a group of foundry employees that met with NY State officials, including Gov. Cuomo and that was instrumental in opening the Waverly Foundry. He was a lifetime member of the L.O.O.M. of Waverly, where he served as President for many years. He loved camping and gardening, always having a ½ acre garden or more and raising his own cows, pigs, or chickens. Harry was one of the original Wal-Mart greeters, where he worked until his health no longer allowed it. Harry also enjoyed his many years of bowling at the Valley Bowling Center.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen in 1997, both parents, mother-in-law Eva Drew, his brother Bob, brother and sister-in-law Carlton Ward and Jacquelin Ward Washburn, and brother-in-law Moe Baker.
Harry is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Paul Rae, grandchildren Rob and Stacy Rae, Mark and Michelle Rae and Adam and Erin Rae; daughter, Jeanne Shafer grandchildren, Jamie and Michelle Pierce, Denise and Jake Rosin, and Jennifer and Neil Randall; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Larry Morse, grandchildren Renee and Jim Kellogg, Amy and Lance Lattimer, Amy Morse and Bobby Morse; son and daughter-in-law Bryan and Maggie Shafer, grandchildren Holly and Rich Egan, Mike and Kim Shafer, Kaleb Rundquist, Elaine Whipple and Larry Whipple; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Dave McCarty, grandchildren Melissa and Tim Streeter, Josh and Caci Lyons, Amanda and Justin Hall, Barb McCarty, Samantha and Tom Bush and Jordan McCarty; daughter and son-in-law Wendy and Eric Featherson, grandchildren Cody Featherson and Breanna Featherson. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Bill and Judy Shafer, sister and brother-in-law Patti and Pete Steele, and sister Louise Baker Albourn. Harry also leaves behind 34 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren.
