Phyllis M. Callear, 85, of Athens, PA passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Towanda Personal Care Home. She was born on October 24, 1931 in Waverly, NY, the daughter of the late Lyman W. and Beatrice C. (Bowman) Mathews. Phyllis was a 1949 graduate of Sayre High School and then attended Ridley Lowell Business School. She was employed at the IR, Athens as a Switchboard Operator, and the Stock Room from 1974-1991, before retiring. She also sold Stanley Home Products in the 1970's. She was very active in the Sayre Christian Church, helping with the church dinners and was a member of the Choir, until her health prevented her from being involved. Phyllis was a member of the IR Randette's, a member of the Valley Chorus, and she volunteered with Guthrie Hospice. Phyllis was an avid golfer and bowler. When her daughters were young, she loved baking and sewing and was very active in their school events, including serving as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She is predeceased by her husband LaVern Callear in 2002, and baby daughter in 1964. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Michelle Callear Jenkins of Elmira, NY and Pam Callear of Athens, PA, her 4 grandchildren Danielle Jenkins and Bobby Narosky of Elmira, NY, Matthew Jenkins and Stephanie Balmer of Elmira, NY, Kaitlin and Brian Smith of Athens, PA, and Cody Weed of New Orleans, LA, great-grandchildren Makaya, Areianna, Layn, Hailey, and Abner, sister, Sandy Leidich of Salem, VA, nephews, Dale Leidich (Heather Brown) and David (Valerie) Leidich, and cousins. Friends and family may call on Sunday, April 9, 2017 from 2pm-4pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 4pmm with the Rev. Kevin Arensman officiating from the Sayre Christian Church. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
