Obituary of Jack G. Patterson
Jack G. Patterson, 85, of Athens, PA passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at his home following a period of declining health.
He was born on September 20, 1932 in Athens, PA, the son of the late Cory and Grace (Wheeler) Patterson.
Jack was a 1950 graduate of Athens High School. Following graduation, he entered the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict with the Army Security Agency, Baumholder, Germany. Upon returning home, Jack attended Penn State University, obtaining his Associates Degree in Engineering. Jack married the former Joan Kandelin in Athens on June 7, 1961, and they celebrated their 48th anniversary, prior to her passing in 2009. He was employed for a short time with GE, Syracuse, NY. He and his wife then returned to the Valley area where he worked as a Mail Carrier with the Athens Post Office and then Ingersoll Rand, Athens, as a Quality Control Engineer and Supervisor, retiring in March of 1991.
He was a devoted member of the Athens United Methodist Church. Jack served as a Trustee for 15 years and on the Administrative Board at the church. On Sunday mornings, Jack could be seen alongside his beloved wife singing in the choir. Jack and Joan were members of the Valley Chorus for many years and also toured Europe on two occasions with the First Presbyterian Church of Endicott Touring Choir. He was a member for over 60 years of the Rural Amity Lodge #70, Athens.
Jack loved being outdoors and usually could be found in the garden or the blueberry patch. He also enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and watching Penn State Football. He enjoyed listening to classical music and playing the trumpet. Jack always looked forward to the annual Barrett-Patterson Family Reunion with anticipation of visiting and sharing memories.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan, brother, Edward Patterson, and sister, Gloria Ann Patterson.
Jack is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jon and Stacy Patterson of Virginia Beach, VA and Jeffrey and Colleen Patterson of Athens, PA, grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Amelia, and Riley, brother and sister-in-law, James and Mary Patterson of Athens, PA, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family may call on Friday, May 4, 2018 from 6pm-8pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11am at the Athens United Methodist Church, 118 South Main Street, Athens, PA with the Rev. Helen Learn officiating.
Burial will follow at the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
