Obituary of Ernestine Ann McDermott

Ernestine A. "Sophie" McDermott, 86, of Athens, PA passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Athens Health and Rehabilitation Center following a period of declining health. She was born on October 13, 1931 in Blossburg, PA, the daughter of the late Stanley and Marcella (Manikowski) Soporowski. Sophie was a 1949 graduate of Mansfield High School. Following graduation, she attended Robert Packer School of Nursing, graduating in 1952 as a Registered Nurse. During her nursing career, Sophie was employed with Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre and retired from Heritage Nursing Home, Athens. She was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Church in Athens. Sophie was very involved in her community and was the recipient of the Red Cross Sarah Barton Award and the VFW Citizen of the Year Award. Sophie was a member of the Robert Packer Hospital Nursing Association, Sayre-Athens Lioness, Welcome Wagon, and the Penny Prominators. She served on the Auxiliaries of Penn-York Opportunity and the American Legion. She is predeceased by her husband, Richard McDermott, and brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Joan Soporowski. Ernestine is survived by her son, Thomas McDermott of Campton, NH, daughters, Mary Loretta McDermott of Athens, PA and AnneMarie McDermott of Reno, NV, son, Michael McDermott of Carniege, PA, several nieces, nephews, and many close friends. Friends and family may call from 6pm-8pm on Wednesday, August 15. 2018 at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 9:30am at the Church of the Epiphany, 304 South Elmer Avenue, Sayre, PA with the Rev. Andrew Hvozdovic officiating. Burial will be in St. Basil's Cemetery, Dushore, PA. Memorial donations may be made in Ernestine's memory to a charity of ones' choice.
