Obituary of Barry L. McCann

Barry L. McCann, 71, of Waverly, NY passed away with his loving wife and family by his side on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre following his long courageous battle with COPD.

He was born on June 26, 1947 in Elmira, NY, the son of the late Robert and Carmelita (Smith) McCann.

Barry graduated from Southside High School, Elmira. Following graduation, he joined the US Army, serving during the Vietnam War as a Crew Chief on the Huey Helicopters. Barry retired as a Corrections Officer from the Elmira Correctional Facility.

He loved spending time with his family and friends. One of his hobbies that he really enjoyed was woodworking, making several items for his children and grandchildren. Barry also loved visiting Atlantic City with Diane, simply walking on the Boardwalk, enjoying the scenery, and visiting the Casinos. He enjoyed fishing and bowling. Barry and Diane for many years were on bowling leagues with friends. When his son, Patrick was younger, they would spend their time racing Remote Control Cars and fishing together. In his younger years, he would spend time with his brother Jim, as a part of his pit crew, when they would go to the MicRod Midget Races.

He is predeceased by his grandson, Nicholas Cook, step-son, Brett Casselbury, sister, Kathleen McCann Cole, brother, Robert McCann, and mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Beatrice Miller.

Barry is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Diane at home, children, Kelly and Steve Cook of Pine City, NY, Patrick and Colleen McCann of Elmira, NY, and Jill and Tory Kitching of Elmira, NY, step-son and his wife, Chad and Karen Casselbury of Lockwood, NY, grandchildren, Julia, Nathan, and Jacob Cook, Aliyah McCann, Anthony and Ava Kitching, Kaiden Casselbury, and Zachary and Dylan Cooney. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, Pat and John Goble of Elmira, NY, Linda and Bob Dieterle of Horseheads, NY, and Jim and Cindy McCann of Elmira, NY, sister-in-law, Sandy McCann of Elmira, NY, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Connie Miller of Waverly, NY, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pat and Preston Hand of Waverly, NY, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and the mother of his children, Irene McCann.

Friends and family may call on Monday, October 1, 2018 from 11am – 2pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 2pm with Lay Pastor Lee Thompson officiating.

Burial will follow in Chemung Cemetery, Chemung, NY.
