Obituary of J. Loushay

J. Clayton Loushay, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Estelle Provo Loushay, daughter Nancy (John) Helgeson of Chambersburg, PA, son Clayton L. (Marian) Loushay of Woodbridge, VA, four grandchildren Rachael (Christopher) Roode of Dallas, TX, Sarah Helgeson (Shawn) Holmes of Sarver, PA, Captain Noelle Helgeson of Albany, NY, and Charles (Gisela) Sturzenegger of Woodbridge, VA. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren Zayne and Declan Holmes. Clayton was born in New Albany, PA on August 11, 1918 to the late J. Lloyd and Olive Clarke Loushay. He later moved to Athens, PA where he attended and graduated from Athens High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he met Estelle Provo of Clarksville, TN while hospitalized to have his appendix removed. They were married on February 14, 1943 while stationed at Camp Campbell (now Fort Campbell) in Clarksville, TN. He served in the Pacific Theatre in New Guinea during World War II. After being discharged from the Army, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a Letter Carrier, was promoted to Postmaster at the Athens Post Office and later Postmaster of the Sayre Post Office until his retirement in 1980. Clayton enjoyed spending time with his family at his cottage in Fair Haven, NY, and in later years just spending time at home with Estelle and their cat Melody. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens, PA, and until his passing, was the oldest living member of the church, having been a member for 82 years. He was a Session Member of the Presbyterian Church. Clayton served as Scoutmaster of Troop 37 of the Boy Scouts of America, Athens, PA for 25 years, in which he was proud to have had 140 scouts receive the high award of Eagle Scout. He was a member of The Masonic Order Rural Amity Lodge and Shrine, Sons of Italy Roma Madre lodge #1342, V.F.W. Skiff Bower Post #1536, American Legion Ft. Sullivan Post #246, Disabled Veterans, Valley Chamber of Commerce, and was a past Director of the Athens Building and Loan. Friends and family may call on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will follow at the Funeral Home at 2pm with the Rev. Nelson Kopatz from the Athens First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
