It is with deep sorrow the Chacona family announces the passing of their beloved mother, Ruth Jesse Nichols Chacona, 92, a lifelong resident of Sayre, PA., passed on July 13, 2012 peacefully at her home following an extended illness. Ruth was born June 22, 1920 in Sayre, PA at the Robert Packer Hospital, daughter of the late Lee A. Nichols and Lena P. Camp Nichols. She was a devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader. She seldom missed an episode of any soap opera. Her most noted hobby was knitting and crocheting. She continually made sweaters and blankets for children, grandchildren and friends. Ruth loved the outdoors, planting flowers, camping and fishing 6 months every year. She was an exceptional cook. Ruth worked at Chacona’s Diner, Remington Rand, Ithaca Gun, Nocchie’s Hoagie Stand and finally retiring from Sylvania in 1985 after 20 years of service. Married July 20, 1937, Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Theodore P. Chacona of Sayre. She is survived by her children: Donna (John) Detrick, John (Charlene) Chacona, Theodore C. (Jennifer Hicks) Chacona, and daughter-in-law Mary Jean Chacona, Georgia Chacona, Paul (Claudia) Chacona, and James (Pat) Chacona. Also, her grandchildren John Detrick, Ruth (Ray) Lefton, Joseph (Penny) Detrick, Kathleen Quinn, Jacquelyn (Drew) Hilferty, Theodore Chacona, Jr., Michael Chacona, Katherine Hicks Chacona, Ethan Chacona, Timothy (Shonna) Richards, John(Maureen) Tchinnis, Krista (Shawn) Chacona-Crane, Stephanie (Kevin) Wilson, Casey (Arlo Warner) Chacona, Jennifer Morris, Israel (Melissa) Chacona, Kerstin (Matthew) Zock, Jami Chacona and 29 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Evelyn (Ossie) Chacona as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their overwhelming gratitude to the many caretakers, especially Janet Hoagland, Jamie Miller, Michelle Smith, Kyli Bella and Annie Hill who took such loving care of her over the years. At the request of Ruth, there will be no viewing or funeral services. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Sayre Public Library, 122 S. Elmer Ave., Sayre, PA 18840 or to Stray Haven Animal Shelter, 194 Shepard Rd., Waverly, NY 14892. Burial will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery.
