Obituary of Scott Taylor

Always a gentleman….a gentle man…possessed of a gentle soul. Scott Taylor of Athens, PA passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at his home in the hands of his loved ones. Born on February 15, 1946, Scott was the loving son of William and Betty Taylor of South Williamsport and a source of great pride to them. He was predeceased by his mother in October of 2013. Scott's father, William, takes peace in knowing they are together again. Scott was an avid sportsman. In the second half of his life, golf was his most consistent passion, followed by hunting. These two pastimes kept him year-round where he loved being most – outside in the fresh air, whether it be balmy or snow-filled, surrounded by nature's beauty. He simply golfed until it snowed, then hunted until it melted. In his younger days, baseball was his forte; pitching was his strength. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs during his junior year while playing baseball at Mansfield University. As preparation for a potential career in baseball, Scott set upon a rigorous course of strength training which ultimately resulted in the exact opposite; he blew out his arm, having never stepped onto the professional playing field. The fates had different plans for him; for him they determined he would be a teacher here in the Valley at Athens Area Schools for over 29 years, retiring in 2001. It is of smaller import the subjects or grades he taught, the numbers of sports teams and athletes he coached. What he taught best was what he taught freely and naturally - and that was kindness and respect. As the result of a blind date at a donkey basketball game, Scott met, married and is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Georgia. Their consummate and greatest joy lives on in their two sons, Jason and Austin. Jason, an athletic trainer with Geisinger Sports Medicine, lives in Selinsgrove, PA with his wife, Kara and their 20 month-old son, Scott's grandson, Gavin Scott Taylor. Austin, a Mortgage Specialist with PNC Bank, resides in Pittsburgh as does an honorary son, Jesse Streeter. Never in a bad mood, with never a negative word said to anyone, nor about anyone, Scott was known to many as a good friend, a caring and giving coach and mentor by example, a compassionate teacher. What you saw of Scott outside his home was the same inside his home only greater, far, far greater. There is no measure to be applied of how deeply, lovingly extraordinary he was as a father to his sons, as a husband to his wife. Scott lives on in them and in all the children whose lives he touched. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 4pm-8pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A private funeral service will be held for the family. The family requests memorial donations be made in Scott's memory to any favorite charity that directly benefits children or athletes.
