Obituary of Robert D. Setzer
Robert Donald Setzer, 92, of Sayre, PA, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Towanda Memorial Hospital.
He was born on January 27, 1922 in Mildred, PA, the son of the late Albert J. and Rose Bishop Setzer.
Upon graduation from high school in 1942, Robert enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was an amateur and professional boxer with a record of 43-3. While in the Navy, he was the 1943 and 1944 North Atlantic Fleet Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion. He also fought in the quarter finals of the US Nationals at Madison Square Garden in 1944, representing the US Navy.
He was a retiree of IBM, Owego, NY where he worked as a Millwright Machinist and Quality Control Inspector during his 25 years there. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening, golf, traveling, wine making, and reading.
He is predeceased by his wife of 50 years Isabelle C. (Cahill) Setzer, daughter Rosemary, brothers Richard and Miles, sisters Florence, Aline, Helen, Catherine, and Donna.
Robert is survived by his sons and their spouses, Robert D. and Gayle Setzer from Worthington, Oh, Eugene and Casey Setzer from Rochester, NY, Michael and Melanie Setzer of Sayre, PA, Christopher and Davee Setzer from Delaware, OH, and Patrick and Joanne Setzer of San Diego, CA, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sisters Marion Thomas, Shirley Taffe, and Celine McGlynn, and special friend Patricia Cole.
Family and Friends may call on Friday, June 27, 2014 from 6pm-8pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 10am at the Funeral Home.
Burial will be Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
