Lisa Hawken

Obituary of Lisa Allen Hawken

"It is with a heavy heart that we look back on the life of our colleague, our leader, and our dear friend, Lisa Hawken. To say that Lisa Hawken was... the High School Principal would be a vast understatement to what she truly was to the school, the community, and the district. One staff member summed it up when she asked, How will we go on? Lisa was this school." Lisa grew up in Athens, Pennsylvania and graduated from Athens High School in 1993, where she was an outstanding scholar and athlete. While in high school, Lisa was awarded the prestigious Valley Principals' Award for excelling in academics and athletics. This award goes to one outstanding female for all the school districts in the Valley area. She attended Bucknell University as an undergraduate and earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Before graduating in 1997, Lisa received numerous honors at Bucknell for her academic successes as well as her performance on the Women's Track and Field Team including the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year for indoor and outdoor track and field in 1996 and 1997 respectively. She was captain of her indoor and outdoor track teams for the 1996-97 season and received the Bison Club Senior Athletic Award which is given to a senior who exemplifies the winning spirit of Bucknell' s athletic program. In 2000, Lisa received a Master of Science Degree in Educational Administration as well as her Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Administration. She began her career as a 2nd and 3rd grade classroom teacher at the Bath-Haverling Elementary School in May of 1997. At Bath, Lisa coached varsity track and field and modified basketball. In August of 2001, she was appointed Elementary Assistant Principal at Campbell-Savona Elementary School. In the summer of 2006, Lisa took over as the principal of the Campbell-Savona Junior-Senior High School, a title that she held until her untimely passing on December 29th, 2015. Lisa was the loving mother of daughters, Lydia and Maggie Hawken, and the wife of Bath police officer, Steve Hawken. She was a devoted and involved mother who was a constant presence in the lives of her children. If she wasn't coaching her daughters on the field, she was cheering avidly from the stands. To the rest of her family, Lisa was a loving daughter and sister who brought joy to her family every day. She especially loved holiday traditions. She loved the beach where she would sit by the water from sunup to sundown. Lisa was also known for her coupon shopping, especially at Kohl's and Lane Bryant's or at any location where a coupon could be used. Taking after her mother, Lisa was an avid reader. As a professional, Lisa was instrumental and inspirational in creating and nurturing a community at Campbell-Savona that went beyond that of a public high school. She was a principal for the students and a supervisor to the staff, but her job always extended well-beyond the walls of the school. She was an enthusiastic supporter and genuine fan of the arts and sports at Campbell-Savona. To the staff and students, she was a counselor, an advocate, and a friend. Ask anyone in the school, and they will tell you that she was a great principal, but it was how she cared for the school, the community, and the people that will be her true legacy. She is predeceased by her maternal grandparents Paul and Alice Bustin, paternal grandparents William and Marge Allen, maternal aunt Ann Maynard, paternal aunt Phyllis Odi, paternal uncles Larry Ammerman & Jerry Allen, and cousins Christopher Watkins, Sharon Fuller, and Lloyd Sullivan. Lisa is survived by her beloved husband of 18 years Stephen Hawken at home, her cherished daughters Lydia "Bug" and Maggie "Mae" Hawken at home, and loving parents Michael and Mary Lou Allen of Athens, PA. Lisa is also survived by her sister and friend Lori Allen Unger & brother in law Gabriel Unger of Athens, PA, maternal aunts Peggy Young of Troy, PA, maternal uncle and aunt Paul M. and Sheryl Bustin of Lititz, PA, maternal aunt and uncle Nancy Bustin and Rick Callear of Towanda, PA, paternal aunt and uncle Mary Lou and Joseph Hiley of Athens, PA, and Connie and Jack Ball of Burdett, NY. She also leaves behind her special father and mother-in-law Danny and Georgia Hawken of Elmira, NY, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Danny, Jr. and Angela Hawken of Horseheads, NY, and Joshua and Alisha Hawken of Holly Springs, NC, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her loyal friend from childhood Stacey Sickler of Athens, PA. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
