Obituary of Jack Walter
Jack Walter was born in Lebanon PA on April 22, 1934 to Mary and Harry Walter. Late in 1934, the family moved to Sayre when Harry was hired at Belle Knitting. They lived in numerous places around the valley until moving to South Waverly where Jack attended the South Waverly Elementary school. As a child in South Waverly, he did field work for local farmers. When the family moved to a farm in Greens Landing, he worked the family farm as well as other area farms and also at Agway.
Jack attended Sayre High School graduating in 1952. In high school, he was on the football team and was selected for the All Valley team in 1951. Sayre High School was where he met his future wife, Marjorie Roberts. After seven years courtship, they married on October 3, 1954. Together he and Marge had four children Lyn, Dan, Dave and Mary.
In 1954, Jack went to work for Westinghouse Electric in Horseheads. He accepted a job at IBM in 1956 where he worked on many projects including the Apollo missions, space shuttle and the space station. He retired as Quality Control Manager in 1991.

During his tenure, he was instrumental in obtaining Round Top Park, establishing the Athens Township Police Department, the Athens Township Volunteer Fire Company, the Athens Township Authority, Northern Tier Solid Waste Authority, the Bradford County Sanitation Committee and the commercial growth of Elmira Street. He also served on the committee that achieved the Valley designation as a FEMA Ready Community. He worked tirelessly during the 1972 flood to keep the bridges open and helped with evacuations and spent many a night riding along in the Township snow plows to keep the drivers company. He and longtime friend Maurice Fay spent countless hours collecting donated and abandoned scrap metal to fund the creation of the Veterans’ Memorial Monument at the Athens Township Building.
Jack was selected as officer of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors in 1976. He served in many capacities including President of the Association from 1991-1992. During his time as a trustee, he was instrumental in the creation of the PSATS office building and training center. As a trustee, he also helped to establish an insurance network from which townships could acquire insurance.
He received many awards and recognitions, among them the Sam Walton Community Leader Award for Hometown Leadership, The Bradford County Township Officials Association Lifetime Membership, The United States Department of Agriculture Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Assistance in Initiating a New Approach to Emergency Stream Restoration, WATS/WAVR Person of the Year, and The Governors Award for Local Government Excellence.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Rural Amity, volunteered with local Cub Scout troops and was a founding member of the Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club.
He traveled the United States and Canada as an avid prospector with a deep knowledge of geology acquired over his many years enjoying this hobby.
He was an ardent hunter and member of many rod and gun clubs and made regular hunting trips around the country and Canada. He was a true outdoorsman who could name any tree or wild flower. After retiring, he spent his time supplying firewood for many a local resident and tending to his nine acre Blueberry Mountain farm.
