Obituary of Rebecca L. Stern

Rebecca "Becky" L. Stern, 66, of Athens, PA passed away unexpectedly at her home on January 24, 2017. She was born on May 22, 1950 in York, PA, the daughter of the late William and Betty (Trayer) Anstine. Becky graduated from Dallastown High School and then continued her education at York College. She graduated with a Secondary Education Degree in English. Becky taught at the Athens Area School District for 29 years, teaching English at SRU Middle School and Harlan Rowe Middle School. Her passion and her life focused on teaching and caring for children. She was committed to preparing her students for the future to ensure they would be successful. Becky was instrumental in organizing the "Food for Thought" program, whose mission statement is "Nourishing Bodies-Nourishing Minds." She volunteered for the "Backpack Program", distributing food to children for weekends and holiday breaks. She was the LFS Coordinator and organized many student school trips. She could always be found in the ticket booth at all the sporting events, enjoying selling more tickets than anyone else. Her outreach wasn't just during school, but also serving the communities in other areas. She volunteered with the Waverly United Methodist Church during their "Grief Camp", counselling children and youth that suffered the loss of a loved one, and organized all of the literature for the group. She also spent time volunteering for "Christmas is for Kids" and the BRIDGE. Becky loved spending time with her family, especially with the pride and joy of her life, granddaughter Hannah. Her faith, her family, her friends, her teaching career, and helping children was always her focus in life. She enjoyed shopping anytime and anywhere. Becky was a lifetime member of the Waverly United Methodist Church. She served as the former Sunday School Superintendent and taught Sunday School. She was the Director for Vacation Bible School, Administrative Council Secretary, and Chairman of the Nurture and Outreach Committee. She is predeceased by her husband Lawrence Stern in 1998. Becky is survived by her children; Alison and her husband Jeff Novak, Patricia Stern and partner Wendy Colegrove, and William Stern, beloved granddaughter, Hannah Rose Stern, brother and sister-in-law, Timothy and Linda Anstine, niece, Jaclynn Anstine, and nephews, Joseph Anstine, and Patrick Anstine. She is also survived by her faithful companions, dog Damien and cat, Watson, her family at the Athens Area School District and many close friends. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched over the years through her teaching and service to the community. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2016 at 3:00pm at the Waverly United Methodist Church, 158 Chemung Street, Waverly, NY. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA at the convenience of the family.
