Obituary of James W. Potter
James W. (Jim) Potter, 84 of Sayre and formerly from Towanda passed away on July 6, 2018 at the Robert Packer Hospital after a brief illness with his daughters by his side.
He was born on April 23, 1934 in Sayre, PA, the son of the late Gerald and Virginia Ware Potter.
Jim attended Towanda High School, He enlisted in the US Army in 1952 and served three years in Munich, Germany. After returning home, he worked briefly for Yoder's Tire Service in Towanda before starting a job at Fulmer Bros. Tire Service in Wysox. On November 17, 1956, Jim married the love of his life, Lola Lantz. Together for over 58 years, they created a warm home atmosphere and raised their family with love, laughter, and happiness. After moving to Fort Myers, Florida in 1984 with his wife and daughter, Lisa, Jim worked at Firestone until moving back to Pennsylvania in 1987. He then went back to work at Fulmer Bros. until retiring in 1999.
Jim was a good-natured, quiet man who loved animals and his family deeply. He was a member of bowling leagues for many years; liked to play cards, golf, and also played softball in his younger years. Beginning in 1975, Jim built and raced slot cars for several years with his son Cliff and other friends. He enjoyed going to Tioga Downs Casino, yard sales, helping Veda Rose at Discover the World Children's Center, quiet times with his pets, and ice cream.
He is predeceased by his wife, Lola, parents Gerald and Virginia Ware Potter, in-laws, Clifton (Kip) and Mildred Strope Lantz, son Cliff E. Potter, son-in-law, Wade W. Warner, brothers Gerald (Junior), Donald (Dick), and Charles (Huck) Potter, brother and sister-in-law, Paul (Bud) and Helen Potter, his only sister, Mary Imogene Hawkins Thompkins, brothers-in-law, Roy Hawkins and William Thompkins, nephews, Donny, Scott, and Jeff Potter, and also his beloved dog, Kendall.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Sherry Warner of Sayre, daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and David Scheftic of Sayre, PA, grandsons, Cliff James (Jay) Potter of Niagara Falls, NY, Williams Franks II, David Scheftic, and Patrick Scheftic all of Sayre, granddaughters, Christina Sue Nina Potter and Lisa Lee Potter of Niagara Falls, NY, Gabriella Scheftic of Sayre, PA, Michaela Hadlock and her husband, Kevin of Athens, great-granddaughter Norah of Athens, great-grandsons, Kurt, Zachary, and Corey Merritt all of Niagara Falls, NY, sister-in-law, Marian Potter of Apopka, FL, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving are his beloved Sheltie and best friend, Daisy Mae, his cats, Oscar, Molly, Skeeter, and Sadie, and a much-loved Boxer named Phoebe.
A Military Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Tioga Point Cemetery, 803 North Main Street, Athens, PA.
