Obituary of Richard A. Geiger
Richard Alfred Geiger 87, of Sayre, PA, passed away peacefully at home with his family and friends at his bedside on Tuesday October 9th, 2018 following a broken heart.
He was born on November 6, 1930 in Allentown, PA the son of the late Alfred S. and Margaret E. (Schnerring) Geiger.
Richard was a veteran of the US Navy. Upon returning home, he worked as a machinist at Ingersoll Rand. He loved the railroad and started as a brakeman then went on to become a locomotive engineer for the Lackawanna, then Erie Lackawanna railroad. Retiring in 1992 from Conrail.
Richard (Dick) was a loving husband, father, grandfather, step grandfather and friend. He married the love of his life Janet Geiger on New Year’s Day 1981. For 37yrs they celebrated life to the fullest by traveling throughout the United States, visiting many western states and Hawaii. They took many trips visiting family and their “vacation hotspots”, which meant they were headed to the casinos. They also loved friendship, music and square dancing with the Penny Prominaders.
Richard loved history and cross word puzzles. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.
He is predeceased by first wife Francis (Aumick) Geiger, daughter, the love of his life, his second wife, Janet L. (Peet) Geiger, Lynn (Geiger) Gans, step-daughter, Laura McCarthy and brother, Donald Geiger.
Richard is survived by his beloved family: His children, son Allen and Rosanna Geiger of Las Cruces, NM; son-in-law Thomas Gans of Doylestown, PA; daughter, Tamara and Michael McGinnitty of Apache Jct, AZ.; step-children: son, Larry Millard and Vicky Girardi of Athens, PA; daughter, Mona and Matt Marshall of Waverly, NY; son, Russell Millard of Colorado Springs, CO; son-in-law, Dennis McCarthy of Sayre, PA. Grandchildren: Kathleen and Ken Matismchuk of Essex, PA and Kristina Gans of Nasua, NH., and Roy Geiger of Las Cruces, NM. Step-grandchildren: Joseph and Kim (#1) McCarthy of Tucson, AZ., Joshua and Kim (#2) McCarthy of Sayre, PA, Kierstin Gardner of Athens, PA, Sarah and Jeffrey Rae of Anderson, SC, Genevieve Millard of Apalachin, NY, Matthew Millard serving in the Air Force at McGuire AFB in NJ, Caitlin and Justyn Kinsley of Sayre, PA, Nathan Marshall of Greece, NY, and Casey Jo Millard of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by his step-great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Ella, Colton, Jordan, Ahren, Porter, Raven, Ashton, Hudson, Madelyn, Hannah, Jacob, and Dennis. Brother-in-law, Ron and Carol Aumick of Mesa, AZ; sister-n-law and good friend, Virginia Miller of Horseheads, NY, Daniel Geiger of Ararat, NC; sister-in-law, Louise Geiger, nieces and nephews: Michael Goodwin, Sharon Dellapenna of Owego, NY, Kathleen Dickensen of Locke, NY, Timothy Geiger; sister-in-law Pat and niece Polly; brother-in-law, Robert and Donna Peet of Dunedin, FL..
Family and friends may call on Sunday, October 14th, 2018 from 10am-11am at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11am at the funeral home with the Rev. Linda Rogers officiating.
Burial will immediately follow at the Nichols Cemetery, Nichols, NY.
