Obituary of Virginia Mae Crowley

Virginia Mae Crowley of Lake Frederick, Va. died peacefully on May 23, 2019 after a brief illness. She was a native of Athens for 90 years before moving to Virginia in 2007 to be closer to her family.

She was the daughter of Maude and Ralph Crocker and was the youngest of six children. Virginia, also known as Ginny, met the love of her life, Bob Crowley, in high school and they married on August 22, 1942. Bob was deceased in 2012. She and Bob had three children, Carol (Ocala, Florida), Bob, (St. Augustine, Florida) and Suzanne, (White Post, Virginia). Four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren are part of Ginny's family.

Virginia graduated from Athens High School in 1936 and also attended Elmira Business Institute. She had several jobs, but most remember her as the office manager/secretary to several Athens High School Principals retiring in 1978. She ran the office, provided support to several faculty and students and successfully ran several activities for the Athens Area School system.

She was a member of the Sayre Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and was active in the St. Mary's Guild. She was one of the key members establishing the Athens Business and Professional Women's Club. Virginia loved her crossword puzzles, big band music, watching all her birds, especially cardinals, and loved to get out and shop. You could sometimes find her at her favorite ice cream shop chatting it up with customers using her keen sense of humor and contagious laugh to make new friends.
